Congratulations! Instructor Che Kuang Chuang won the Best Experimental Film award at the 2023 LAFA Awards

Congratulations! Che Kuang Chuang, the project instructor of NTUT Interaction Design Department, has been honored with the Best Experimental Film award at the 2023 Los Angeles Film Awards for his personal work, "Noise Landscape." This project is part of his ongoing series titled "Landscapes," initiated in 2023 to explore current events in Taiwan using various technological media, resulting in three distinct works. "Noise Landscape," the awarded piece, is an experimental video combining CG and AI technologies for the first time. It was also selected for the Taoyuan Art Exhibition in the New Media Art category in October this year. Che believes that the Interaction Design Department is a forward-thinking institution that constantly absorbs new technologies and perspectives. By maintaining his creative habits and participating in exhibitions, he contributes to teaching within the curriculum.

The artwork is divided into two parts: the artist's perspective and the AI perspective. Initially, the artist constructs a surreal installation of the Taiwan island using 3D tools, featuring numerous whispering faces hovering above the island to express the diverse imagery of Taiwanese society. Subsequently, these image data are input into the generative AI-Stable Diffusion for reconstruction. With the addition of news releases generated by ChatGPT, the AI interprets and recreates the images, creating two different perspectives.

The award received, the Los Angeles Film Award (LAFA), is one of the highly-reviewed film festivals on the international film award submission platform "Film Freeway." Its judging panel consists of professionals from the American film and television industry dedicated to promoting emerging film and television teams on the international stage. Apart from Che's work, many outstanding Taiwanese projects, including the Golden Horse Award-winning animation "Pigsy" and the MV "There's Already Someone Next to Her" by Hsu Fu-kai + Flesh Juicer, have been recognized. Che feels honored to join these accomplished seniors in making an impact on the international stage.
