Professor Yi-Ting Huang from the Department of Interactive Design guides graduate students to win the Gold Award in the National Science and Technology Council's "Science Popularization Creative Pine" Film Awards with "Drunken Mystery: The Behavior Explained"

Congratulations! Professor Yi-Ting Huang from the Department of Interactive Design mentored students Chen Yu-Zhen and Huang You-Qiao, who won the Gold Award in the university category at the 2024 "Open Call for Science Popularization Creative Pine" short film competition, organized by the National Science and Technology Council. Their 12-minute science film "Drunken Mystery: The Behavior Explained" stood out among 460 entries nationwide. The award ceremony will be held on February 14, 2025, at the Songshan Cultural and Creative Park, where Director Li Wang-Long of the Department of Science Education and International Cooperation at the National Science and Technology Council will personally present the award.

"Drunken Mystery: The Behavior Explained" is a science popularization film that focuses on the drinking culture prevalent among today's younger generation. Through real-life stories, it analyzes the effects of alcohol on the human body, combining science with smooth animation storytelling, while advocating for a balance between health and drinking.

Huang You-Qiao, who was responsible for the film's planning and editing, stated, "Our creative inspiration came from real-life observations. Professor Yi-Ting Huang's research lab focuses on user behavior research. In the past, we've done extensive work on social media and gamer behavior. When looking for a topic, we realized that 'drinking' as a user behavior is worth sharing through a science film! Many people do things after getting drunk that are hard to believe, such as speaking in crazy English, suddenly sitting down and crying, forgetting things, or even running around. These behaviors may seem absurd at first, but there are scientific principles behind them. To ensure the scientific accuracy of the film, we referenced medical institutions and research by foreign scholars on the effects of alcohol on the human body, and we checked science websites to verify the accuracy of the content. We hope that viewers can gain reliable knowledge while being entertained!"

Chen Yu-Zhen, who was responsible for the frame-by-frame 2D animation design, said, "In an era where short videos dominate, it's very hard to get people to watch a longer film. We wanted to present this serious topic in a light and fun way to make people want to watch and share. Therefore, we used hand-drawn animation, which not only makes the visuals more appealing but also allows us to freely exaggerate drunken behaviors. We pay great attention to the completeness of information delivery and the viewers' absorption of the content. So, besides making it fun through the drawing style, we also designed the structure of the film, presenting it in segments. Each segment starts with a funny real-life example of drunken behavior, followed by a scientific explanation. This way, the audience doesn't feel the film is too dull and can resonate with each scenario."
