Interdisciplinary Collaboration: NTUT Interactive Design Department Enhances Classic Dance Drama "Qixi Rain" with AR Technology
We are delighted to announce the collaboration between the NTUT Interactive Design Department and the Taipei Chinese Orchestra in bringing the classic dance drama "Qixi Rain" to a new level of visual and interactive experience.
"Qixi Rain," a national dance drama first presented by Ms. Xu Huimei in 1984 during the Taipei Arts Festival, and later performed again in 1995 at the National Theater, has been revived this year through a collaborative effort between the Taipei Chinese Orchestra and the NTUT Interactive Design Department. The performances took place from June 16th to 18th at the Taipei Performing Arts Center, accompanied by live music from the Taipei Chinese Orchestra.
Under the guidance of Professor Hsiao-Yue Tsao, the head of the NTUT Interactive Design Department, and with the involvement of outstanding alumni Tz-Heng Fu, who specializes in new media technology, the team applied cutting-edge AR technology to enhance the stage projection. This integration of virtual and real elements brought a fresh perspective to the timeless dance drama.
In addition to the stage enhancements, an interactive AR game titled "Listening to Rain on Qixi" was developed by NTUT's XR R&D Center and Chunghwa Telecom Information Technology Division. Led by Professor Tz-Heng Fu, a group of freshmen—Lin Yuru, Li Xuanqiao, Xie Chengwu, Li Pinzhen, and Yang Zhihuan—designed a sensor-based interactive installation. This AR game, utilizing Microsoft Kinect technology, captures the players' body movements and projects them into the virtual Qixi scene. This innovative addition allows the audience to experience the graceful dance movements of "Qixi Rain" firsthand before entering the venue.
This performance not only combines classic dance drama with emerging technology but also introduces an immersive and interactive element, blurring the lines between traditional art forms and contemporary innovation. The dancers, in perfect harmony with the musicians, create a captivating performance that intertwines the melodies with the precision of their movements.
