Congratulation!! Prof. Chun-Ching Chen won the National Innovation Award.
The National Innovation Award is the highest recognition in the fields of biomedicine and health innovation in Taiwan. The judging panel consists of top scientific experts, clinical doctors, government officials, legal and regulatory authorities, finance and business management professionals, as well as leaders from the biomedical and technology industries, who evaluate the entries from multiple professional perspectives. Among them, the "Academic and Research Innovation" category primarily focuses on academic organizations, assessing innovation in technology, R&D outcomes, patents, and market competitiveness in relevant fields.
The award-winning research team includes Professor Chun-Ching Chen from our department and Dr. Long Guo, a doctoral student from the College of Design. The product awarded is a rapid communication command interface system using eye control technology (product name: HENRI - Henry's Eye), designed to improve communication quality between patients with speech impairments (e.g., ALS) and their caregivers. The design concept centers on user needs and combines medical care with advanced technology solutions. Through a 3D digital human model, multilingual graphical communication interface, solutions for eye control interaction issues, and operation on tablets or laptops, it addresses communication challenges in daily care, thus enhancing the overall quality of home care for patients.
HENRI has undergone user testing with ALS patients, demonstrating its effectiveness and providing a practical and efficient communication aid for patients and their families. This has significant implications for improving the quality of patient care and offers a concrete, feasible reference for the development and practice of human-centered medical care products.
