Assistant Professor Chuang Che-Kuang** of the Department of Interaction Design (ID) at Taipei Tech received significant international acclaim in 2025 for his VR360 creation, "Toilet Consciousness".
The work was honored with the **"Jury Special Mention (Mención especial del Jurado)"** at the **CutOut Fest – International Animation and Digital Art Festival**, held in Mexico from November 13th to 16th, 2025. It also won the **“Best in Digital Art”** award at the **QLD XR Festival** (Queensland New Media Arts Festival) in Australia.
CutOut Fest and QLD XR Festival Recognition
CutOut Fest is one of the longest-running, largest, and most artistically driven animation and digital art festivals in Central and South America. Its submission categories cover digital art, animation, experimental film, and VR, attracting thousands of submissions from dozens of countries worldwide annually.
* Amidst fierce competition, "Toilet Consciousness" received the jury’s recognition, fully demonstrating its creative power and unique perspective. Other Taiwanese works selected this year included "八洞妖" (produced by TAICCA and SPOTLIGHT-Gisoo) and artist Duan Mu’s "山水訣", showcasing the diverse creative energy of Taiwan in new media and animation.
QLD XR Festival is an emerging, authoritative festival in Australia dedicated to virtual reality, immersive storytelling, game art, and new media creation. Many mature and experimental international works were nominated this year.
* The Grand Prize was jointly sponsored by Meta and Red Bull and awarded to renowned VR director **Jonathan Griffiths’ “Touching the Sky.”** Deep Silver’s AAA-grade VR game **“Metro Awakening”** was also on the list, highlighting the high level of competition.
About "Toilet Consciousness"
"Toilet Consciousness" is a personal VR artwork by Chuang Che-Kuang. The piece transforms architectural research methodologies into immersive cinematic narratives, exploring the corporeality, spatiality, and social metaphors inherent in the **“toilet as a contemporary heterotopia.”**
Its ability to stand out among such a strong international line-up indicates its outstanding creative power in **conceptual depth, spatial composition, and narrative structure**, earning high praise from the judges.
Chuang Che-Kuang stated that the QLD XR Festival showcased the diverse possibilities of new media creation on the global stage, allowing XR and VR art to see a broader future within the global cultural context.
